Sorry for jumping in this thread, but I have the same video card and the problem that Xfree86 4.2.0  doesn't find /dev/gpgart ;  I compiled it inside the kernel, not as a module.
I created it after installing Xfree with: mknod c 0 175
is it correct or there is something wrong?
