When you say TinyX uses no configuration file - do you mean that it does
not require one to work, or that
even if one (e.g.) XF86Config is present, it is ignored ?

Yes, that's correct. The intent is for TinyX servers to not require
significant configuration, and it was originally designed to run on a
machine with no writable file system.
