That helped somewhat. No more freeze, but X still crashes back to text
mode. The log file states:

Symbol RADEONEngineInit from module
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o is unresolved!

So, back to 4.2.0 for a while...

Actually I did get picture on the second head, but I was trying to find
a means to test the heads independently, as if they were attached to
separate cards. CRTScreen seems not to affect anything.

Doh. I was using drivers shipped with Mandrake 8.2. After I switched to
stock XFree86, I first got the same freeze as with the CVS version. When
I disabled DRI, I actually could get both heads to work! Whew.

Anyway, there is still something to hope for. First, regardless of
XF86Config-4 settings, the DVI output seems to be the primary display. I
cannot plug my bigger monitor to it because of abysmally bad analog
picture quality of the output, and I couldn't find a way to define the
primary display to be the one connected to VGA output. I've tried
tweaking the Screen settings in Device section of the config file, as
well as different configurations in the Screen and ServerLayout
sections, but the primary screen is always the one connected to the DVI
output.

Maybe related to the problem above, Xv only works with the primary
screen (the DVI output connected to the small monitor). This wouldn't
bother me if I could switch the larger screen to be the primary one.
Furthermore, changing resolutions of the secondary screen with
Alt-Ctrl-+/- seems to make X freeze quite often (and in any case, even
though I assume it should only affect the focused one, it switches
resolutions of both screens).

So, is it too far-fetched to expect being able to watch TV with xawtv
full-screen on the bigger display, and being able to watch Xv based
video on the bigger screen, while still using a Xinerama configuration?
Or should I just forget it?

Best regards,

Matti Airas
