I have more or less the same problems than you with a S3 Trio 64V+ card. Xfree works fine for me until I switch to a console and then return to X and then video is garbage.
After asking here without any luck I posted a bug report (earlier today) on the xfree86.org website. Hope this gets fixed soon..
