I have more or less the same problems than you with a S3 Trio 64V+ card.
Xfree works fine for me until I switch to a console and then return to X
and then video is garbage.

After asking here without any luck I posted a bug report (earlier today)
on the xfree86.org website.

Hope this gets fixed soon..

Ronald

Subject: [Xpert]XFree 4.2 + S3Trio card

Hi Xperts,

I can't seem to get my Trio64V2 card working correctly under 4.2, even
though it is said to be supported. My problems are as follows: If I use
ctrl+alt+numeric +/- to change resolution, my machines freezes
completely,
no VT switch, no nothing. Also if I change from X to another VT with
ctrl+alt+Fx and then back again, the display gets unreadable, and stays
that way. It looks a bit like the "war-of-the-ants" you get when your TV
isn't tuned for a cannel. I have experineced these problems under both
FreeBSD and Linux.

If these are known problems, I apologize, but I haven't been able to
find
any info at all about S3Trio cards and 4.2, apart from that they are
supposed to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Below is my XF86Config.)

/Joakim
