this is my first post to this list, so i am not entirely sure if this is
the right forum for advice/support -- apologies if i am wring here...
anyway, i've had lots of difficulties setting up an SMP system over the
last two days. finally everything boots nicely, it's a debian sid
(unstable) system, with an SMP configured kernel (2.4.18), the current
version of X in unstable is 4.1, so that's what i am using. i also
installed the nvidia drivers for the geforce4 mx 440 card using the
nvidia-kernel-src and nvidia-glx-src packages. the nvidia module loads
nicely too, however when i startx with the driver "nvidia" the screen
goes black followed by a reboot of the entire system. i tried this with
and without the agpart module loaded -- same difference. i also tried to
startx with the "nv" driver, but that doesn't work and i get a list with
supported cards (geforce4 is not among them)
so, i am asking for advice before i do something drastic - is the nvidia
geforce4 chip supposed to work at all with xfree 4.1? if not, should i
try 4.2 instead? any suggestions for what i might be doing wrong?
system specs:
tyan S2466 tiger mpx
2 amd mp cpus (2000mhz)
asus vb770 ddr 64mb (geforce4 mx 440)
