Somewhen in autumn 2001 there was a commit to CVS, which made G450
cards use clone mode if only one screen specified. And, as I've
discovered, it is a *hardware* clone, not software, i.e. the signal from
1st CRTC is commuted to both outputs. I've checked it by running X in
24+8bpp mode, which isn't supported by 2nd head. Additionaly, when
changing video parameters with xvidtune, both monitors had changed.
I'm not sure if this behaviour is still in effect -- in last tests
I've seen 2nd head blank if only 1st screen specified in config.
BTW, do you run both cards w/o HAL module? And, can you check whether
secondary card's screen(s) remain alive after switch to console and
back?
