Well, thats the funny part...
In 3.3.6, line 218 of the file programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/accel/s3/s3.c:
{ IBMRGB524_DAC, "ibm_rgb526" },
It would appear that the old driver treats the 526 identically to the 524.
Simply adding detection support to the new driver didn't work however.
