I have a Wacom ArtPad (tm i think) connected through the serial port. This is no
problem as long as it is connected,
but when it is not X11 tried to see if it is there every now and then. Typically this
happens during VT switching
and when GTK+-based applications start. This adds a huge number of seconds (~10) to
these operations.

So the question is: Is there a way of telling X that there currently is or is no
device attached? That is, without editing
the XF86Config and restarting X?

I have tried using a symbolic link for the device but that does not help. Since the
computer is a laptop I'd rather not
drag the pad everywhere I go.
