Yeah, I didn't think so either except that I would get that same 2
second or so cpu spike as I did when launching gnome-terminal. After
playing with it, it is not that the mouse doesn't grab, it will grab
every time, it is just sometimes I have to wait for it-- maybe this is
related to the software/hardware cursor?

I disabled it because I ended up with two very small ugly cursors with
it on.

I did the following with ShadowFB on at 16 bit color depth:

[james@sirius james]$ x11perf -repeat 1 -shmput500
x11perf - X11 performance program, version 1.5
The XFree86 Project, Inc server version 40201000 on :0.0
from sirius.strandboge.cxm

Sync time adjustment is 0.0461 msecs.

    800 reps @ 7.6679 msec ( 130.0/sec): ShmPutImage 500x500 square

[james@sirius james]$ x11perf -repeat 1 -copywinwin500
x11perf - X11 performance program, version 1.5
The XFree86 Project, Inc server version 40201000 on :0.0
from sirius.strandboge.cxm

Sync time adjustment is 0.0460 msecs.

  12000 reps @ 0.5461 msec ( 1830.0/sec): Copy 500x500 from window to
