Well, I played with it some more, and I can't seem to reproduce the
configuration that gave the two bad cursors.  HWCursor is now enabled,
and the cursor looks good.  The performance problems with regards to
ShadowFB are not addressed by enabling the hardware cursor however (eg,
not of that, including the grabbing of a window with the mouse). 

For completeness, I reran x11perf with HWCursor enabled:
