Did you try to use fn+f5 *before* X starts? I have the same problem with a toshiba satellite and the same trident s**t, but if I switch the output while still in text mode and/or while displaying the graphical lilo menu it works (only tried it with the tv output though, not with an external crt). It's annoying because I need two different X configurations (I need to tweak XvHsync and XvVsync to get Xvideo working on the tv output) but at least I can use it to play videos on the tv. BTW: I had to revert to an old trident_drv.o (the one shipped with mandrake 8.2, i.e. XFree86 4.2.0) because the one supplied in 9.0 (4.2.1) and the one available at http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh don't work with Xvideo (they work with some sizes of the video clip but with other sizes -- e.g. 480x352 planar YV12 -- the image is misplaced, like broken into three overlapping columns).
