Unfortunately, I'm just a dumb consumer as far as X is concerned.
How can I "play with the polarity of the sync?"
I've read the monitor's manual, but couldn't find any info as to
whether it's composite or separate sync. (I had to put Option
composite_sync off in the Monitor section of XF86Config to get
picture with the ATi card FWIW; the Matrox one doesn't require it.)
Modelines are all greek to me.
To further describe the problem: it's best visible with dark text on
bright background, where the letters have bright "ghosts" to the
right. It looks like dark text above bright text, shifted a bit to
the side.
I'll just add that it doesn't seem like a convergence problem, or at
least not one I could fix through fiddling with the monitor controls.
I would be eternally grateful for any further help with this
problem. (I'm not asking you to do my homework, but any pointers
would be greatly appreciated.)
