XFree86 uses DDC to detect a VGA monitor; for a laptop this usually means an external monitor, and X can behave differently, depending on the details returned by the monitor, so it isn't a big suprise that it behaves differently if the monitor is plugged in at start up. The Radeon DDC support, especially for laptops, has been changed in the last week, so I suggest you try a very recent CVS build and see if that helps. -- Dr. Andrew C.
