i must admit that i am no genius at all when it comes to graphics and
the technology behind the different parts of X.

i have a setup documented by the attached XF86Config-4 file as it runs
on my Latitude C610 with a Radeon Mobility LY. it's dual head and
works perfectly as such. i start it through xdm.

nevertheless, it makes a difference to X whether an external VGA
monitor (analog flatscreen) attached or detached.

If it's detached, then X comes up just fine, displaying the second
screen on the external monitor as soon as I plug it in (after it
started).

If the VGA cable is attached at the time of loading X, then my laptop
flatscreen goes all funky (black and white, melting around the screen,
constantly changing and giving me a general feel that it's not good
for the display) and the external monitor stays blank.

when i use the Fn-F8 combination to toggle the display, the second
screen comes up on the external monitor in 640x480 mode. if i press
Fn-F8 again, it comes up on both (as 640x480), and another press will
just make it show on the laptop, this time without the weird white
melting thingy.

but it's 640x480, and i am wondering why it makes a difference whether
the external screen is attached or detached.

let me know if you need to see logfiles.

thanks,
