hi, forgive me if there's an obvious answer to this. i've been looking for a reasonable answer for a while. my 'hack' solution works, but is just completely disgusting.
i need to run IC design tools, specifically the infamous Cadence suite, for my work. these tools _insist_ on running only for 8-bit displays, pseudo-color style. my desktop is (naturally) running at a much better depth thant this. so i can't run cadence and direct the windows to my desktop, which is sad. my hack solution is to use 'vnc' and run 'vncserver -depth 8 -cc 3' to get another X server with the right depth, and then route all cadence displays to my vnc X server. then i use vncviewer from my console to my display :1 and have it working. ok. this aside. can someone explain to me why a 24- or 32-bpp X can't allow apps that demand 8-bit PC to run, and just provide them with an 'emulation' wrapper? i'd _really_ like to get rid of the vnc go-between for a wide variety of reasons. it seems like an obvious thing, but i can't figure out how to make it work. thanks, -josh _______________________________________________ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert
