Hello, I am writing this email to notify you I had the same problem as Mikkel Lauritsen with my nForce motherboard graphics.
The XFree86 drivers in the XFree86-4.2.0-72 RPM package which comes with RedHat 8.0 do not work with nForce properly. When doing a RedHat 8.0 install I need to use textmode or else I get a black screen and need to hard reset the computer to reboot. I sent RedHat a bug report while RedHat 8.0 was still in beta but they did not fix it in the final release: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=72721 'X -version' returns: --- XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-72) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 23 January 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/) Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18-11smp i686 [ELF] Build Host: daffy.perf.redhat.com Module Loader present OS Kernel: Linux version 2.4.19 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 3.2 20020903 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2-7)) #3 SMP Fri Nov 1 10:35:45 WET 2002 P --- I compiled and installed XFree86 4.2.0 myself and it didn't work either. Boy is that compilation process longwinded or what? Your CVS 'nv_drv.o' works fine for me. Opera menu fonts actually look ok now and they didn't when I used the NVIDIA driver. ;-) It does seem to be a bit slower however... I needed to use 'startx -- -ignoreABI' like you mentioned. Thank you, I was getting tired of having X server problems with those buggy NVIDIA drivers. :-) --- Vasco Alexandre da Silva Costa @ Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisboa _______________________________________________ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert
