Thanks for all your help. I have successfully tried the Rage 128 version and the Mach64 version.
The Mach64 version appears to have three problems. I don't know if you are aware of them so here they are.
1) Switching from X to a tty (<Ctrl><Alt><Fn>) results in the X session reporting a SIGHUP and dying.
2) Shortly after starting a 3D app. (gears from Mesa-demos is a good one) the fps drops by 30 - 50. Most weird however is that these 30 - 50 fps can be recovered by moving the mouse !! Stop moving the mouse and it slows down again and so-on.
3) It seems to run at 50 - 100 fps slower than the old 3.3.6 drivers (not a big deal I can still play Tux Racer !! :-) )
The Rage 128 version exhibits none of these problems.
Hope this helps,
Owen

Thanks for that. I am a little less confused ! I still think GATOS is a type of French cake :-)
However, I noticed from you web site it says :
Cards earlier than the ATI 3D Rage Pro don't have a triangle setup engine and are not supported. This includes ... and ATI 3D Rage Mobility
?!?! what does this mean ?
Note that ATI 3D Rage Mobility is listed under _supported_ (there are two
lists in that paragraph, the first are unsupported and the second are
supported). I should make this more clear on the site, but there are
cards called "3D Rage XXX", _without_ "Pro" in the name that have only
very limited 3D capabilities -- i.e. texturing, but no triangle setup. AFAIK, all "Rage Mobility" cards using mach64 are of the "Pro" variety and have triangle setup.
How am I going to paly Tux Racer if they are not supported :-(
Well, time for the big one ! Download, build and install - I may need some help here :-) pretty please !
Sure, I can help. Also, have a look at the docs and FAQs on dri.sourceforge.net.
