Ok, I got a Dell Latitude C640 with a Radeon ATI Mobility 7500 and loaded it with RH8.0. I upgraded the kernel to rawhide kernel kernel-2.4.19-0.pp.20. I upgraded my XFree86 to Mike Harris' development release of 4.2.99.2-0.20021126.10.As DDC doesn't seem to work with your external monitor, you may need to
When I was using the RH8 XFree86 version of 4.2 I could get 800x600 on my external monitor (vga port off the back of the laptop). Now, I can only do 640x480. My monitor is a Dell P991 and can do 1600x1200. It is having problems reading in my hsync/vrefresh range, as you can see from this part of the log:
(WW) RADEON(0): Monitor0: Using default hsync range of 28.00-33.00kHz
(WW) RADEON(0): Monitor0: using default vrefresh range of 43.00-72.00Hz
provide the refresh ranges it supports with Options "CloneHSync" and
"CloneVRefresh".
I also tried useing an option called crt_screen, but it complained that there was no such option (I'm using version 4.2.99.2 of xfree86).
