Not really... there are going to be ugly hacks and tradeoffs to any approach 
you take to try this, and what you decide depends on what you want out of it.

Yes, you'll need to make all that dynamic.  It's a PITA and not something I'd 
ever be interested in doing.

I'm still curious why you can't just install the .pkg and what you think is so 
terribly broken about XCode 2.3.6
