If your DISPLAY environment variable isn't set, that's the problem.  Given that 
you're using ssh -X, it's likely that the ssh server is configured to disallow 
X11 forwarding.

See http://www.xquartz.org/FAQs.html, specifically the last couple lines of the 
section which indicate the need for 'X11Forwarding yes' in sshd_config
