I had this figured out. I put /etc/pam.d/xrdp-session with the following:
#%PAM-1.0
auth include system-auth
account include system-auth

im using xrdp-0.4.1 (from sourceforge site). When i connect its giving me,

....
....
login successful for display 10
started connecting
connecting to 127.0.0.1 5910
error - problem connecting.

Anything i missed ?

You have to edit the xrdp pam file in /etc/pam.d
Its called sesman or xrdp-sesman depenging on the version of xrdp.
Edit it to look like something that works like kdm(kde login) or
gdm(gnome login)
