I also had this kind of problem with one of our users.
It seems that you are using the vnc backend.
If you change your unix password with a running Xvnc session, the unix
password and the vnc password get out of sync. So you have update the
vnc password as well using the vncpasswd tool (password file should be
under ~/.vnc/sesman_<username>_passwd).
Alternatively, you can just restart your remote session.
This worked quite well for me ;)
