A good place to start reading about competitions is Kathy Dyer's FAQ!

There are great tips on what the judges watch for in the stitcheries.

I've not entered needlework in a competition myself (yet), but I have done a
correspondance course through EGA where the teacher goes over your piece
carefully and critiques it. I didn't find it frightening at all. In fact, I
really appreciated the time and effort the teacher took to tell me about my
work. It helped me to see how I can improve on my work, and also showed me
what I'm doing RIGHT. It was a great learning experience.

Isn't that like life, though? You can go through life worrying about how
others are judging you and only seeking your imperfections. OR you can go
through life knowing you are being judged, and then discovering for yourself
what judgements make a difference to you (so you can change) or what
judgements don't make a difference to you, because in the larger scheme of
things, they just aren't important? And in the process, you get to learn a LOT
of skills and improve on yourself.

Whoops! Guess I got in "minister" mode there for a minute! LOL
