Elizabeth, what a fabulous idea!  Certainly he will "ask" as you are such a
thoughtful and caring person!  I had another thought though.  When you find
this pattern of the Lab, why don't you modify the design and stitch it on
bigger count fabric and use #5 perle instead of DMC floss?  This way, the
stitches will be raised much more than floss and your friend will be able to
"feel" the design that much better.
