What? I thought this list was about needlework!
Well, it is. And so it the novel! I was in the local grocery store a couple
weeks ago, browsing the paperbacks, and this title popped out at me: "Crewel
World." The front cover says, "The first in the brand new series ... free
needlepoint pattern included."
The back cover says, "The art of needlecraft requires patience, discipline,
and creativity. So, too, does the art of detection. Just ask Betsy
Devonshire--who's learning that life in a small-town needlecraft shop can
reveal an unexpected knack for knitting ... and a hidden talent for unraveling
crime."
That was enough. I bought the book.
As a former English Lit student, I'm one of those folks that reads EVERY page
... even title pages, forwards and dedications. It's a brand new book,
copyright March 1999 by Berkley Prime Crime, New York. This book has a thank
you to the online stitchers from rctn (the needlework newsgroup). Well! Then I
was REALLY sucked in. I found out later that a thread about this book has been
going on rctn for a while now.
The book was fun to read. A simple murder mystery with some nice familiar
surroundings ... a needlework shop called Crewel World. The characters were
distinct and fun ... you could imagine running into just these folks at your
own local shop.
I give it a thumb's up!
Usual disclaimers. I just enjoyed the read! OH ... and I hear Meri Abrams
(guide at Crossstitch at The Mining Company) is also reading it. Anyone else
read it and have an opinion?
