I suppose most of you have heard about this, but just in case. This
message came from a friend who works at Offut AFB near Omaha,
which is the home of STRATCOM Formerly the Strategic Air Command.
So this is the skinny from him. Update your virus software.
Don't open anything you didn't ask for and of course scan it first!!
We have a great track record with Happy99, so lets keep Melissa
off the list as well. Thanks!

Very useful information concerning the recent outbreak of the "Melissa"
Virus.
With all the signs around USSTRATCOM and the news coverage, here's the
information on the newest email virus.
What is it: An Email virus, known as 'Melissa'. According to USA Today, It
has forced 50 to 60 systems worldwide to shut down as of Friday. It's
expected to be worse today due to everyone coming back to work from the
weekend. Anti-Virus experts believe the virus was first planted Friday
morning by an America Online Member in an internet newsgroup. The motive is
unknown at this time.
How to recognize it: The subject line says "Important Message From." The
message starts "Here is a document you asked for..." or something similar
The Attachment is usually in Microsoft Word. When you open the Word
attachment, it will ask you to run the Macros associated with the document.
DON'T OPEN THE DOCUMENT and DON'T RUN THE MACROS!! The attachment contains
hyperlinks to pornographic sites. The sender could be someone you don't
know, or it could come from an infected person (friend or acquaintance) who
has your name in their address book / contact list.
What is it doing: When the attachment is opened, it infects your system and
it then emails itself to everyone in your address book/contact list. The
sheer amount of emails that could result from this virus can overload mail
servers and bring down systems.
What you need to do: Do NOT double click on the attachment!!! That will
launch the program and infect your system., YOU should delete the email
without reading it AND THEN reboot your system. You'll probably get the
email multiple times, or have multiple copies in your inbox. Update your
virus definition files for the Norton Anti Virus or whatever anti virus
software you are using. Reboot your machine so the new definition files
take effect. Then run the anti virus software.
Y10K --- why wait until 9998?
