As an alternative to cutting all of the threads in the middle, I tend to cut alternating threads on each end of the row. This gives you a longer thread to work with, and is a bit less "lumpy" looking on each side. I really like the part about having a longer working thread, as weaving can be fairly tricky with a thread short enough so that your hand blocks the view of the fabric.
