Hi, Keeley!

If I have actual samples of the yarns to be substituted, I do what DMC
suggests. I have a floss color card and I match from that. If there are no
actual samples (ie, it's a counted needlepoint chart or a painted canvas or
some such thing) I will either do what you're thinking of (take a look at the
color photo of the completed project and take my best guesses) or I will just
choose whatever colors *I* want to use.

Remember, it's *your* project...if it don't exactly match the original, who's
to know, who's to say it's better or worse? :) If I were you, I'd just choose
pretty colors, and have at it. <g>

DMC floss cards aren't that expensive (at least in the US) and they can be
*very* useful for all sorts of color matching problems, even some that aren't
stitching-related. I have used my floss card to select new paint for a
repainting of several rooms in which I was not replacing the wallpaper (hold
color card up to wallpaper, select color, take color card to paint store,
match color to paint chips.) I have also used the color card to help make sure
a new blouse went with a pair of pants that I couldn't wear to the store for
comparison (they were my mom's pants, I snuck in with the color card, decided
what color the pants were, then selected a blouse I felt would go best with
that color!) Of course, the dangerous side effect of matching colors this way
is that in time one gets to know the colors a wee bit too well....

"My gosh! Look at that lady in that 3806 outfit!!!") <g>

ordered 809.
