Since my Mum is now an English Canal Boat Lady herself, I'll hazard a
guess (only a guess, since she has never mentioned anything other than
this).  She mentioned that people put tatting and/or crochet doilies
in the their port shaped windows (for curtains).

Considering the history of the Canal boat is a working vehicle
(pre-train but same purpose), this whole concept of Canal Boat Ladies
comes as a bit of a shock.  The boat were used to either get supplies
or people from point A to point B.  Which means it could be any kind
of embroidery, simply something to entertain during the trip.

My mind does recall one Brother Cadfael book discussing some type of
needlework and canal boats.  IIRC it was lace that was being made.

I am eager to hear if anyone knows anything as well.
