I dislike it too, probably for other reasons, though. It was a great way
to bring the web to everyone, and it's now slowly dissolving into a
free-for-all of abuses every bit as bad as those I complained about in
1995-6.

Completely. But XML was designed for normal text documents (Word,
DocBook, TEI, even HTML); its use for exchanging *data* is occasionally
useful (eg MySQL's -X option) but is overkill for most purposes. But
that's not XML's fault.
