That aside... sounds like the script, xinput.." command needs to query the device id so that it grows with the OS.

Yes, I thought of that too, but ...
there ***IS*** no such option in xubuntu.
At least I cannot find it.
Under "Mouse and Touchpad" -> switch to touchpad ->
there is a checkbox for "Enable this device" and 2-3 settings pertaining to speed and sensitivity.
That is it.

And .. I have tried the "Disable touchpad while typing" function on other computers.
It is not very helpful and not what I am looking for.
I want to be able to switch the touchpad ON/OFF - preferably with one switch (shortcut key).
That cannot be so difficult, can it?
