This does not set the property (although it works on a one-at-a-time
basis).
What about
Right click -> Open with other .., then select vlc and hook at "default
..." or so?

This does, but it's not working.
This works for me (Thunar 1.6.3, 64 bitXubuntu 14.04.??)
