None, it's a bug in lightdm!  I've hit this before and it's a real
nuisance.  If for any reason (adding/removing packages etc.) the
directory /var/lib/lightdm gets removed then lightdm fails to start
and you can't get to your xubuntu desktop.  If you look in the log
files at /var/log/lightdm you can see the evidence.

A simple 'sudo mkdir /var/lib/lightdm' and everything works again.
