Could it be, that you're using a file manager other than Thunar, that has got a "--no-desktop" option and you're running it without this option? We need to know more. What does the desktop look like? Do you get a xfce4-panel? What do the log files say? ~/.xsession-errors /var/log/lightdm/ What window manger is running? wmctrl -m If you login, does the lightdm greeter allow you to chose a Xfce session?
