Dear Thomas,
Thanks for your appreciation but don't feel discouraged: I myself, over the course of the last year, have been oftentimes very disappointed with the linux distribution I used to use and generally, found a lot of inconsistencies and outright regressions in the newer versions of lots of distros I tried out. I guess we all face a dilemma today: be subject to exploitation of undefined scope by a predatory monopolist or try to get work done with a free software artifacts.
With age, you start getting a better understanding of the human nature. The Internet is a medium where you can easily chip in with a thoughtful advice or an outburst of frustration and hatred and stay anonymous, saying things you would never dare say in front of your peers or neighbours. Please understand that a lot of the people writing comments on the Internet are sociopatic, immature teens that are software wizards but otherwise lack basic human traits.
So my advice is: take it cool, think it over, know who you have in front of you, calculate all the odds. I myself, having spent lots of hours looking for answers in various fora and getting blamed for not knowing the obvious, finally settled on googling for answers - this is the quickest and most efficient way to solving problems.
I just switched to MX-15, having used Mepis from 2008 to 2011. Mepis was perfectly solid and stable, but the guy who ran it had to get a job to earn money for his family, so after joining forces with the Antix community, the former Mepis people produced MX- which continues the good traditon. But be advised - operating system is a complex tool, to make it is one thing, to keep it up to date and modern is another, huge task not for one person but a group of people.
Just a few thoughts and my best wishes for you
Stay cool
Janusz

Personal message
Good "morning" (1:30 am) from Japan
Please excuse this intrusion, but I wanted to send you a personal
message to thank you for your encouragement.
You, and one more person, were the only ones (in over 8 years) that
offered me some positive feedback = encouragement.
However, after trying (not "trying" - desperately struggling) to get
friendly with Linux for more than EIGHT years (probably thousands of
hours of effort), I have now given up.
When over 8 years of struggle still almost does not get me anywhere past
the basically automatic installation of the OS, when the concept of
"working in this environment" forever remains a utopia "over the
rainbow" ... then the whole idea of using Linux is unrealistic.
I envy the people who have no problems.
Me .. problems were practically the ONLY thing I ever experienced. I
presume, I am just not smart enough to use Linux.
And I am really sorry, that I could not turn your encouragement into a
success story, like me becoming a happy, skilled Linux user.
But, I wanted to express my gratitude for your advice.
Thank you!
Thomas
