My trick is to have a Canon iP4200 mod'ed with bulk external inkwells
connected to replacement cartridges with silicon tubing. This makes the
ink *so cheap* I use it *so often* things like clogging up are almost
eliminated (I had one cartridge run almost dry and nearly lost it, but
resuscitated it ok). The printer is getting quite old now as far as
InkJets go, but because it is so cheap to use I am reluctant to give it up.
Mine is the Canon Series 4200 kit I installed, but you can get them for
HP and Epson as well. Many models can be mod'ed.
Before you buy, look up Rhiac (or a similar company) for compatible
models: http://www.rihac.com.au/info_pages.php?pages_id=11
I have no financial involvement with these people, apart from being a
satisfied customer. So I I trust you will not see this as Spam.
However I suggest people investigate this sort of thing to keep the cost
of ink down, way down!!! My kit above was $85 AU at the time c.2008
(now $135), and with the supplied ink was worth about $1600 AU for
equivalent over the counter cartridges. Now I just buy bottles of ink
(separate colours if required) at about $70 a set of 5 by 100ml. I have
used about $6000 worth of supermarket ink so far ;-) It is my day to
day, go-to printer.
just my 2c's

depends always on the printer and is less comfortable. In any case,
better to control if the option exists before you buy.

with an ink yet printer sooner or later you will have to clean and to

Windows for years only to clean and align my ink-jet printer.
Perhaps the best solution is to get an old, second hand _professional_
(not consumer) laser printer.
However, isn't it possible to clean the print head by pushing a
"secret" combination of buttons on the printer?
