It has only been an issue on laptops, not desktops, so I assumed (a
dangerous practice), that it was some conflict between the unattended
upgrades, and the acpi calls.
There was (maybe still is) a possibly-related issue with some (HP?)
laptops and the "suspend" action triggered by closing the lid while the
system is running. I had this some while back after installing
Enlightenment, but solved it by installing uswsusp.

The laptops I have had issue with are Toshiba's, several models, Asus,
HP's and Lenovas. All came right after the latest kernel upgrade, and
the upgrade to apt.conf periodic.
so I will have a look at uswsusp
