The same is true for me! Still the question: how can I have the beep on the other (newer) thinkpad? I found /sys/class/power_supply/AC/online 1 = on AC power 0 = without AC power
as Chris already pointed out, I also think it's BIOS-related, as you can en-/disable that beep there.
