This is my first question to this list.

I've been a long time user of another flavour of Linux and I'm wondering about the wisdom of installing Xubuntu 21.04 on my ageing laptop bearing in mind that Canonical has warned against upgrading to 21.04 because the possibility of booting into a black screen.

I have Xubuntu 21.04 on a bootable USB stick so I'm ready to go, but only if it's safe to do so.

That's probably the best way to find out.

If the laptop is running another desktop at present, there's little reason to believe it won't run xubuntu.

I thank everyone for their replies, however, I'm still not sure that I should click on the "install" button. As I said, Canonical have advised against installing or upgrading to version 21.04. I should have mentioned that I'm currently using version 20.10 (not Xubuntu). Perhaps Canonical will deem 21.10 safe to use. It seems that the problem relates to older computers, my laptop is ten years old, and I do not want to boot into a black screen.

I've been a big fan of my current desktop environment since 1998, however, I'm now in an area with very poor mobile phone reception (I tether my phone to my laptop for an Internet connection). The connection speed varies from 10s of bits per second to an occasional burst to a useable speed. This is causing my laptop to run hot. The same laptop does not run hot under Windows 10 or when I connect to the Internet while running Xubuntu from a USB stick.

XFCE is missing a few features that I currently use including an Internet connection speed indicator. I've tried gkrllm and conky. Conky ran but didn't display anything and gkrllm didn't display the Internet speed. I became frustrated with the Internet dropping out while searching for a solution so I haven't progressed very far with this. Is there an Internet speed indicator for XFCE?
