Hi Chris, I have been experiemcing a similar problem with wi-fi icon
connection, too! I am not an expert on Linux - Ubuntu. This is what I do when
I can not find the wi-fi connector.
1.) I first find the "Applications" icon, and then2.) I click on the "Settings"
selection, then3.) I click on the "Panel" selection, then4.) I click on the
"Panel Preferneces." And a window will appear, then,5.) I click on the button
titled: Items, then6.) I chose the "Tray Plugging" and then click on the + Add
button.7.) A new wi-fi connector always appears and I use for connecting to the
Internet.
However, I noticed that for some reason the wi-fi icons begin to accumulate and
I i find myself deleting the extra ones! This process is not very hight tech,
but it allows me to connect to the internet. I hope it helps! Best regards,
Manny

I am the OP! :-) However your reference is what I needed, I'd
forgotten about that. (I've never really worked out why there is a
Notification Area which seems to work differently from other panel
applets)
So, thank you, I'm pretty sure you have given me the answer, I need to
check it out on my wife's computer to be sure.

It auto starts OK, it's running, just not showing anywhere.
