I stay away from synaptic as much as I can, because the rare two or three occasions I used it, I had unstable results. With synaptic, it definitelly helps to reboot after an install.
But I'm glad you got it, that's the main thing. I can't take credit for it, though, not entirely... I only perused the xubuntu community data on the issue and put together that simple, summarized answer for you after testing it on my guinea-pig test machine.
