the left handed workaround is to install 'localsend'. It runs on any
platform and moves files quickly.

When I plug my Pixel 8a into a Linux system, nothing happens except
charging. I looked for a file manager package on Linux that would
connect to a phone, they all said that MTP was not supported. It looks
like phone-to-host over USB is not A Thing.
Then I found andFTP so now I can connect wirelessly without trouble.
