Gosh, that must be a _very_ old machine, then.
If there is any option to upgrade its firmware, I would recommend it. If
you can tell us the exact make and model and the current firmware
version, I can look for you.
There is a handy little tool called the Plop Boot Manager that will let
a machine that only supports floppy boot start from CD/DVD, and an
optical-only one start from USB.
It's tiny. Put it on a floppy (if you have a drive) or a CD (it's a
waste of a DVD!), boot from it, then it boots from USB for you.
