Hi James, folks here are quite good at offering excellent possible solutions to virtually anything we need, but I notice that sometimes the original question itself gets forgotten...
I am not an expert, but I think that the main reason why it's not included in the minimal version, is exactly because it is "minimal"... as much as possible, the strictly necessary for the version to run on virtually any hardware and then we can install whatever we decode that we need. As an example, some of my machines never connect to the internet or to any other machines (my choice to not connect them, mind you), so I wouldn't need any networking software. However, shall I ever decide to connect to the net, the resources ate there in my munimal os, for me to downliad and install whichever network related software I may need. Hope this simplistic explanation may help answer your question to some extent... it would be nice though, to have someone more knowlegeable to offer a more accurate answer your answer, I would like to learn it as well.
