First of all, do you plan to create xorg.conf or not? If so, would you
specify "ati" / "radeon" or rather "radeonhd"?

Then: The "radeonhd" version currently in the X-consolidation (as of
b118) is "1.2.5", and therefore the most modern one, as you can verify
on the Xorg modular downloads site, dated 09-Apr-2009 06:18.

2560x1600 is already supported.

Even the "ati" / "radeon" driver should support it, not only "radeonhd".
Even the now obsolete version 6.10.0 of it , as shipping on the
default OpenSolaris2009.06 CD, prior to any update through IPS (most
recent version on www.x.org would be xf86-video-ati-6.12.2 08-Apr-2009
07:37, Sun's X-consolidation is not lagging behind).

For the ATI Radeon HD 4850/4870 cards and your display, you should do
the common:

1. # Xorg -configure
2. # cp -i /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Make sure you have this in your xorg.conf file under the "Screen" section:

Either Xorg or your display may default to a recommended resolution
setting, rather than the actual maximum which is technically possible

On a default OpenSolaris2009.06 b111a you should get something like
this, with varying results depending on the presence vs. absence of
xorg.conf, and whether or not "ati" / "radeon" or "radeonhd" has been
specified explicitly. Be aware that Sun's X11 group is in the process
of busily keeping everything current (in sync with x.org). In the
results below the server was still the meanwhile outdated 1.5.3 and
also driver updates are now(?) available through IPS. Despite this,
even the older versions that were on the default CD deliver good and
promising results. So there is hope for you, that it works out of the
box. If not, then you just need to upgrade your IPS image, then you
go. Here the output of the now outdated default:
