Officially, Sun doesn't want or need anything - Sun management seems to be happy
with not supporting older graphics cards on Xorg.

Personally, I would like to see enthusiasts have some solution here, but I'm
not Sun, I just work here.

As for what needs to happen - Martin Bochnig did a lot of work to make the
existing X.Org open source SPARC graphics drivers build and work with the
Xorg server we deliver on SPARC. He stopped though before merging that
work into the FOX gate or any other OpenSolaris code repository that the
community can use - so what needs to happen is for someone to figure out
how to use or re-create that work and integrate it into the FOX gate or
even prepare it for putback to the Nevada master gate. No one has done
anything like this before, so there are no guidelines or instructions, this
is pure figure-it-out-as-you-go work.

Of course, what happens if someone does that is a good question - I don't
know if we'd just leave the sources in the tree so others could build them
or if we could persuade the SPARC graphics team to support the drivers they
didn't have time to port themselves so that we could put them in an official
OpenSolaris or Solaris release.
