Could you please verify, whether or not the following potential workaround is 
able to improve the situation??

# mv -i /dev/fb /dev/fb_prev
# ln -s /dev/console /dev/fb

Maybe (I said _may_ be) the attempt by the userland Xorg ati_drv.so module(s) 
to communicate with the m64 /dev/fb console drivers causes things to hang.
The ati drivers do not necessarily depend on /dev/fb pointing to the actual 
device in /devices, so we can try that out (while I currently don't have a 
PGX24 at hand).
