Just an update to this:

Shader X5
Advanced Rendering Techniques with CDROM
by Wolfgang Engel

I just received word from Sun that a newer driver than the current Nvidia
100.14.11 is in the works and available very soon. One thing to note is the use
of large textures (8K x 8K) on certain graphic cards and intensive graphic apps
like Flight Simulator X w/SP1 (tested under Windows).

The Intel G965 and G35 device drivers under Mesa may need tweaking for
multitexturing of large textures and advanced shading techniques.
The XVR-2500 and Quadro FX 5500/5600 can handle the advanced shader programming
tasks - with the Quadro FX 5500/5600 being very impressive in overall tasks
under Solaris x86/x64. The commercial OpenGL drivers for the XVR-2500 under
SPARC need a bit of updating in comparison to the device drivers for the Quadro
FX cards.

Mesa 7.0 is a viable complimentary solution on both SPARC/x86 OpenSolaris
distros for now as Sun OpenGL is updated to support the OpenGL 2.1 spec or
possibly superceded... ?
