Cycling though the resolutions didn't help, all the options are unusable. I
installed the nvidia display drivers to try to solve the problem, but now X
won't start at all. "Can not load NVidia kernel module".

The module is loaded (modinfo confirms this). In the nvidia driver readme FAQ
it turns out that this is this message also occurs if some of the files aren't
found. Turns out that these files are missing on my system. No idea why, I even
reinstalled the drivers.

These files are missing:
/dev/fbs/nvidia0
/dev/fbs/nvidia1
/dev/fbs/nvidia2
/dev/fbs/nvidia3
/dev/fbs/nvidia4
/dev/fbs/nvidia5
/dev/fbs/nvidia6
/dev/fbs/nvidia7

/usr/X11/lib/modules/drivers/libglx.so
/usr/X11/lib/modules/drivers/libglx.so.1

/usr/include/NVIDIA/gl.h
/usr/include/NVIDIA/glext.h
/usr/include/NVIDIA/glx.h
/usr/include/NVIDIA/glxext.h

I can't remember if I checked for these files:
/kernel/drv/amd64/nvidia
/kernel/drv/nvidia/nvidia
/kernel/drv/nvidia/nvidia.conf

How do I fix this?
