Dear Edward:

The plain and simple reason why the miniroot employs nv and not nvidia 
is that the nvidia driver kit is just
too big, it doesn't fit!   Otherwise, I would have preferred to put the 
nvidia kit in there.
So, we have the disadvantage of differing support levels between 
miniroot install phase and full runtime phase which is in violation
of the intention of identical performance at both phases.  Its ironic 
that some Nvidia gpus (our preferred gpu) let this flaw
be noticed.

On the other hand, the relatively recent miniroot project of moving from 
Xsun to Xorg enabled inclusion of nvidia in the OS install
package (it previously had to be downloaded and installed in a separate 
step after main installation) and also, delivers all the
autoconfiguration and modern gpu goodness of Xorg for so many other 
gpus. Over all many, many more laptops and
systems are working because of it.
